The Object Sphinx Set of Two is inspired by a marble sphinx (ca. 580–575 B.C.) on a cavetto capital—its carved, curved base—dating back to Greece’s Archaic period. The marble sculpture, now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum in New York, once topped the tall grave shaft of a young man named Philinos or Thalinos, and belongs to the earliest type of grave stele produced in Attica during the 6th century B.C. In the early Archaic period, Greek sculptors took design cues from the Egyptians for large-scale monuments. This example has a four-sided structure with flat, stylized features. Our reproductions come as a pair and have been handcrafted in sophisticated white marble, so that each piece shows variations in color and natural veins.
